Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 Americans each year. Tobacco use is a major risk factor for developing chronic diseases such as:
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diseases of the lungs
The Southern Nevada Health District Tobacco Control Program has four major goals:
- Prevent youth initiation of smoking
- Promote cessation among youth and adults
- Eliminate secondhand smoke exposure
- Eliminate health disparities among diverse populations
The health district tobacco control program works to raise awareness utilizing:
- Counter-marketing strategies
- Community initiatives
- School and youth-based programs
- Surveys
- Support local coalitions and community groups that address tobacco issues
