1. Why “Cero Humo” Was Created
Most of the individuals employed in Clark County’s service industry are Hispanic. The majority of these individuals are exposed to secondhand smoke at work. A large number of these individuals speak more Spanish than English.
In Clark County no culturally and linguistic appropriate interventions about secondhand smoke have been developed and implemented to reach this population. For this reason this program will reach Hispanic individuals in Clark County, Nevada who speak more Spanish than English and who are exposed to secondhand smoke at work or at home, or who smoke.
2. Cero Humo Program Goals
To increase awareness about the hazards of secondhand smoke within the adult Hispanic community using a culturally and linguistically appropriate intervention.
3. What method of intervention is Southern Nevada Health District using?
To reach the target population we utilize narrowcast methodology for program delivery. This placement strategy is based on the principle of placing public health messages in public private places where individuals from a specific target population are momentarily alone and thereby uniquely receptive to educational and preventive information.
4. Why this project is an appropriate intervention?
Evaluation findings revealed that individuals exposed to the campaign exhibited more confidence in their abilities to protect others from secondhand smoke and advocate for a smoke-free environment.
