Nevada School Wellness Resource Binder
The idea for the Nevada School Wellness Resource Binder was developed in response to the passage of the Nevada School Wellness Policy and intimate understanding of the very difficult realities in K-12 school settings.
The concept of the binder was built around the need for a practical Nevada-based working resource to assist individual school wellness coordinators in their efforts to create a healthier school environment. The resource is a Nevada document because the practical ideas which comprise it are from educators in Nevada’s schools.
Making this binder a Nevada based resource is a primary strategy to:
- Heighten the probability for its use.
- Reinforce effective wellness programming strategies.
- Provide models for effective practice.
- Show how barriers have been removed in other Nevada schools.
The binder is considered a working document because information to supplement the binder will be continually developed and disseminated. These supplements will be derived from the test site portion of the Nevada Healthier Schools project and will also be continually solicited from all Nevada K-12 schools. This supplemental information will be published and disseminated during the second year of funding.
Since contributors are identified, they receive public recognition and acknowledgement for their work and this may serve as additional incentive for schools to conduct effective wellness programming. It is our intent that this continual solicitation and potential for public recognition will be deemed as prestigious. For this reason, the binder must be a professionally published document.
The resource binder will consist of cutting edge educational material, of which, will be useful in recruiting support and assistance from administration, faculty, staff, students and parents toward developing a healthier school environment. This section will include a series of nutrition and physical activity fact sheets and ideas for how to use them such as in the formulation of presentations, assignments, quick public service announcements, articles for the school newspaper, posters, class contests, and etc. The binder will have a wealth of information organizational structure ideas which address how the eight components of Coordinated School Health can work more closely together to create a healthier school environment.
The binder will also consist of two sections devoted to before, during, and after school physical activity programming and identification of statewide and national resources for physical activity.
The last two sections of the binder will be devoted school promotion of healthy nutrition and the identification of nutritional resources.
