Goals and Objectives

Goal 1

Build and strengthen partnerships and provide networking opportunities for members and other interested individuals or organizations.

Objectives: January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010

  • Hold at least four face to face meetings so members can network with each other. Feature presentations on obesity-related projects/activities from at least one member organization at each meeting.
  • Send at least four ‘Obesity Updates’ to members and other interested parties via e-mail.
  • Support PHN members’ efforts to secure grant funding for obesity-related research and interventions by writing letters of support, facilitating collaborative partnerships, and providing a venue for grant project sharing and information gathering via regular coalition meetings.
  • Keep current and expand as necessary the Partners for a Healthy Nevada webpage on the Get Healthy website (www.gethealthyclarkcounty.org).
  • Update the PHN electronic member directory at least twice per year.

Goal 2

Raise awareness in the community of the importance of physical activity and healthy eating in preventing obesity and overweight.

Objectives: January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010

  • Participate in at least one community event related to obesity-prevention.
    • Set up educational booth to distribute member information and provide nutrition and physical activity education and information.
  • Increase the number of schools in Clark County that are recognized as President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Demonstration Center Schools.
    • Coordinate annual effort to encourage local schools to submit application.
    • Seek grant and sponsorship funding to support and expand the program
    • Publicly recognize schools that meet Demonstration Center School criteria
  • Participate in appropriate community outreach opportunities to share education and resources and/or educate professionals on PHN and obesity-related topics and issues.
  • Support efforts to improve nutrition among school-aged children including efforts to increase the number of schools participating in federal meal programs.
  • Update and maintain a community Speakers Bureau comprised of PHN members willing to give community presentations on obesity and related risk factors.

Goal 3

Advocate for state and local policy and environmental change that supports physical activity and healthy eating.

Objectives: January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010

  • Develop a 2011 Nevada Legislative Session Advocacy Strategy Plan in conjunction with member organizations such as the American Heart Association that includes:
    • Identification of key nutrition, physical activity and obesity-related issues
    • Developing a compendium of resources to support positions on key issues
    • Identification of key allies, likely opponents and PHN members willing to provide testimony and education leading up to and during the session
    • Development of a ‘white paper’ on obesity
  • Update and maintain a list of PHN members that are willing to provide education/testimony and/or advocate for physical activity and nutrition issues.
  • Research and provide updates for PHN members on state, local and national obesity-related legislation or policy.

Membership

Membership is open to any individual or organization that has an interest in obesity prevention. Members will be asked to fill out a membership form. PDF (27 KB/1 page)

Meetings

The Partners for a Healthy Nevada coalition meets quarterly. Meetings are held on the 3rd Friday of February, May, August and November. Meeting times are from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. At the end of each calendar year, the membership will review the meeting schedule and determine if the dates for the quarterly meetings need to be changed. Special planning meetings for activities may be called and scheduled by the convenience of the membership. All PHN members are welcome at all special planning meetings. The Facilitator will be responsible for scheduling quarterly and special meeting dates and locations.

Facilitation

At the beginning of each calendar year, one PHN member will volunteer to act as the PHN facilitator. This role includes scheduling the meeting, arranging for a meeting room, developing agendas based on input from other members, taking minutes at the meetings and distributing meeting information to PHN members.

Decision Making

All decisions will be made by consensus of the members present.

Goals and Objectives

At the first quarterly meeting of the year, members present will review a year-end report summarizing the previous year’s progress on stated goals and objectives. Goals and objectives for the new year will be drafted and reviewed by members at either a special planning meeting or via email. Input from members will be included into a revised draft that will be presented to members at the first quarterly meeting of each year. . At least one PHN member will be assigned to oversee progress on each objective. Goals, mission, and vision statements will be reviewd annually and revised as necessary.
