PHN Projects

Partners for a Healthy Nevada is currently involved in the following community projects:

  1. President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Demonstration Center Sites:

The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS) Demonstration Center Project is an initiative to promote and recognize elementary and secondary schools that clearly emphasize physical activity and fitness in their physical education programs. Over the years, participation in this program has declined due to a variety of reasons. However, with the increase in childhood obesity and the need to raise awareness of the importance of quality Physical Education, the President’s Council has developed alliances with other organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and Governor’s Councils to help revitalize this project.

Locally, Partners for a Healthy Nevada (PHN), took the lead to re-establish the program in Southern Nevada. We know that while there are many constraints, many of our schools are doing an outstanding job providing quality Physical Education and wanted to recognize those efforts.

To be eligible for recognition as a PCPFS Demonstration Center School, schools have to complete an application, demonstrate that they met certain criteria and receive a site visit from a committee of PHN members. All elementary and secondary schools in the Clark County School District are eligible to apply.

Collaborating with PHN on this project are the University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension, the Southern Nevada Health District, and the Clark County School District. 24-Hour Fitness is a major sponsor of the project and provided physical activity prizes for students, teachers and staff at each school selected as a Presidents Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Demonstration Center School including pedometers and club memberships. In addition, 24-Hour Fitness provided a complete HOPS Sports System to one of the schools selected.

  2. Nike 5K for Kids Event

PHN participates and supports the annual Nike 5K for Kids event. The Nike 5K for Kids is dedicated to youth physical fitness. The annual event raises money for physical activity equipment and programs at local schools and thousands of youth and adults participate. PHN has an interactive booth at the event and also provides educational material to encourage parents and guardians to participate in the event with their children.

The event is held every November. Please check back for additional details including the date and time of the 2008 Nike 5K for Kids Event.
