Community Obesity Survey: Executive Summary
In late 2010, the Southern Nevada Health District—Office of Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion contracted with the Cannon Survey Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to conduct a statewide adult telephone survey.
A total of 1,508 people participated in the survey: 1,207 Southern Nevada residents and 301 from Northern Nevada. The purpose of the study was threefold:
to determine public perceptions as to the severity of obesity in the community;
to identify perceptions as to the causes of obesity, and
to identify support for specific interventions to combat obesity, particularly in children.
Over 30 Clark County School District schools participated in International Walk To School Day, which celebrates and promotes the Safe Routes to Schools Program by encouraging children and families to walk and bike to school. Senator Breeden also participated in the event and seven businesses partnered with the schools to help make this event successful. Watch the CCSD International Walk to School Day 2011 video.
SB27
On May 24, 2011, the Nevada State Legislature passed a law requiring at least two of the 15 hours of annual training required for child care providers be in the area of lifelong wellness, health and safety of children and must include training related to childhood obesity, nutrition and physical activity.
The bill was sponsored by Southern Nevada’s CPPW leadership team member, Senator Valerie Wiener. Coalitions, leaders and partners from Southern Nevada and the rest of the state provided education, research and advocacy to support the bill. The bill took effect on July 1, 2011 and impacts the work of over 573 childcare centers.
Nevada Moves Day
Over 50 Clark County School District schools participated in Nevada Moves Day, which celebrates and promotes the Safe Routes to Schools Program by encouraging children and families to walk and bike to school.
Local dignitaries including the Mayors of Henderson and Las Vegas were on hand to walk with the children.
Governor Sandoval and Las Vegas Mayor, Oscar Goodman also issued proclamations in recognition of Nevada Moves Day.
Clark County School District
The Clark County School District revised their menu policy to eliminate use of trans-fat and limit the number of desserts served with school lunch.
