Make a list: To make shopping trips more efficient and avoid impulse buying, make a list. Stick to what is on your list, but don’t let it prevent you from trying new healthy foods. The Healthy Shopping ListPDF (315 KB) is a convenient way to organize your list.
Shop the perimeter: Fresh produce, meat and seafood departments are usually found on the outer edge of grocery stores, which is where you want to concentrate most of your shopping.
Don’t shop hungry: It can be hard to resist buying those high-fat, high-calorie items when you are hungry. Have a healthy snack before going to the store so you won’t be tempted.
Do read food labels: Routinely check food labels to compare nutritional values of products to make healthy choices.
Don’t forget the fiber: Load up on whole-grain breads, rolls and cereals, as well as brown rice and dried beans. When shopping, look for the word “whole” at the top of the ingredients list.
Do go green: When buying salad greens, select those with the deepest color. The dark color means higher concentrations of antioxidant vitamins.
Don’t dismiss the frozen produce: Most frozen fruits and vegetables contain as many nutrients as fresh produce, so don’t pass them by.
Check out your local Farmer's Market: Farmer's Markets are a great way to get fresh regionally grown food and now several of the markets are accepting EBT (electronic benefit transfer), debit and credit cards.
