The Injury Prevention Program's mission is to promote public health prevention approaches to reduce morbidity (disease), mortality (death) and risk behaviors related to unintentional and intentional injuries.
- Unintentional injury (drowning, falls, etc.) is the leading cause of death in Nevada and Clark County for all age categories from 5 through 44.
- Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death in Clark County for children 4 years of age and under.
- The leading cause of intentional injury death in Nevada and Clark County is suicide.
Nevada is one of only 3 states that have more deaths from suicide than motor vehicle crashes.
Implementation of effective injury prevention initiatives benefit the community in three ways:
- Saves lives
- Prevents injury-related disabilities
- Reduces health care and associated costs
Increasing community awareness that the most serious injuries are predictable and preventable is a significant challenge for our program and all injury prevention practitioners.
