Background and Program Development
The Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion are dedicated to reducing the suicide rate in Clark County through the development of a complete community program designed in accordance with the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention: Goals and Objectives for Action issued by the Surgeon General in 2001.
The Southern Nevada Health District’s role in the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention is the development and promotion of awareness. Our three main goals are:
- Promote awareness that suicide is a preventable public health problem.
- Develop broad-based support for suicide prevention.
- Develop and implement strategies to reduce the stigma of people seeking access to services for the treatment and prevention of suicide, mental health, and substance abuse
The health district’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion is working with the State Suicide Prevention Program, the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Clark County Children’s Mental Health Consortium to develop public information campaigns designed to:
- Increase public knowledge of suicide prevention
- Increase public understanding that mental and physical health are equal and inseparable components of overall health
- Increase public understanding that people pursuing mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and suicide prevention can greatly improve their overall health.
Nevada Vital Statistics reports the death rate for suicide (per 100,000 population) in 2004 for Clark County was 16.2 and for the state of Nevada 18.2. The latest official national rate (per 100,000) is 11.0 for 2005. The health district is dedicated to reducing the Clark County suicide rate to below the national average by 2010.
