Cardiovascular Disease
Definition
Cardiovascular disease is a disease of the heart (cardio) and blood vessels (vascular) caused by a narrowing of the blood vessels, which is often due to accumulation of plaque in the lining of the blood vessels.
Cardiovascular disease is a general term that includes many types of heart disease including, but not limited to, heart attack and stroke.
Heart disease and stroke—the principal components of cardiovascular disease—are the first and third leading causes of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all deaths.
