LUCES
2005 Accomplishments

Latinos Unidos Celebrando Salud accomplished the following during 2005 thanks to the efforts of its members and in partnership with the Southern Nevada Health District.

1. LUCES members partnered on “Ventanas de Salud” Project and sponsored the Community Outreach Health Fair with Nevada Cancer Institute, Mexican Consulate, and Cancer Information Services
2. LUCES collaborated and formed part of a media review committee for “Cero Humo” the secondhand smoke educational campaign
3. LUCES lunches were sponsored by institutions or agencies in the business sector and by the SNHD
4. LUCES Bylaws were amended
5. LUCES T-shirts were distributed to members
6. LUCES sponsored a Strategic Planning training for members, conducted by Karen Durkin from Houldsworth, Russo and Company
7. LUCES members partnered with the Southern Nevada Health District and the Diocese of Las Vegas Catholic Church on a health project for the parishioners
8. LUCES sponsored the Second Hispanic Luncheon; “Celebración por la Salud”- American Diabetes Association (diabetes awareness in the business community)
9. LUCES coordinated the following presentations for its members:
   • The Important Role of Evaluation in Health Promotion and Intervention by Dr. Richard Papenfuss, professor for Health Promotion at UNLV
   • AARP Senior Program - Jackie Phillip, Project Director
   • Access Health Project of Great Basin Primary Care Association - Nancy Whitman, Project Director
   • Cero Humo Educational Campaign - Jonathan Holly, Educational Message Services
   • Early Childhood Services - Laurel Swetnam, Director of Safe Schools Healthy Students
   • Nevada Center for Ethics and Health Policy Project - Elisabet Romero, Multicultural Health Education Coordinator
10. LUCES participated in the following activities:
    • “Cinco de Mayo”
    • “Las Fiestas Patrias”
    • “Conocenos” Health Fair-Hispanic Lutheran Church/Nevada Donor Network Inc.
    • SNHD Diabetes Screening Event
    • “Rafael Rivera Community Outreach Health Fair”
    • Race for the Cure - American Cancer Association
11. SNHD and LUCES members partnered on a new radio show where members had the opportunity to disseminate their program information to the Hispanic community:

• “Cáncer”- Nevada Cancer Institute

Third Program:

• “Inmunización” Southern Nevada Health District
• ”Ventanas de Salud” Health Fair- Nevada Cancer Institute, Mexican Consulate, Cancer Information Services and LUCES
• Produced “Ventanas de Salud” Health Fair Public Service Announcement

Fourth Program:

• “Pruebas de Diabetes” - Southern Nevada Health District
• “Plomo” – East Las Vegas Community Development Corporation
• “Exámenes de Laboratorio Clínico” – Primex
• Produced “Pruebas de Diabetes” Public Service Announcement

Fifth Program:

• “Salud en las Mujeres es Conección” - Nevada Cancer Institute
• “Programa de Vida de Adolescentes y sus Familias” - Southern
  Nevada Area Health Education Center

Sixth Program:

• “Programa de Servicios Sociales de la Iglesia Lutera” – Iglesia Luterana del Camino a Cristo
