Muevete Bailando (Movement & Dance) is a pilot project sponsored by the Chronic Disease Prevention Program and Tobacco Control Program and the Nevada Alliance Against Diabetes. The project provides Latin dance instruction and physical health education to a diabetes support group in Las Vegas.
A Latin dance instructor attends a monthly diabetes support group in Spanish and gives 30 to 60 minutes of dance instruction and encouragement. The goal at each meeting is to get the participants out of their chairs and moving for at least 30 minutes.
SNHD Chronic Disease Prevention staff is also at each meeting to provide a short presentation on the importance of physical activity to diabetes prevention and self-management. We encourage participants to use the dance steps they learned to keep "moving" regularly. Culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials and resources on physical activity, nutrition and tobacco are distributed to support group participants.
The support group is free and the pilot project will continue through December 2007. Pre and post surveys will be given to evaluate the pilot project and determine future directions.
