Muévete Bailando (Movement & Dance)
Muévete Bailando (Movement & Dance) is sponsored by the health district's Chronic Disease Prevention and Tobacco Control Programs and the Nevada Alliance Against Diabetes. The project provides Latin dance instruction and physical health education to a Hispanic diabetes support group in Las Vegas.
During the monthly meeting, a Latin dance instructor gives 30 to 60 minutes of dance instruction and encouragement. (The goal at each meeting is to get the participants out of their chairs and moving for at least 30 minutes.) Participants are encouraged to use the dance steps they learned to keep "moving" regularly.
Additionally, Chronic Disease Prevention staff provides a short presentation about the importance of physical activity to prevent and manage diabetes. Culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials and resources on physical activity, nutrition and tobacco are distributed to group participants.
